Implementing the UNCRC in schools: comparative approaches (Entry September 2012)

An analysis of the ways in which children and human rights are conceptualised in different cultural contexts.

An analysis of the ways in which children and human rights are conceptualised in different cultural contexts.

The United Nations Convention on the Rights of the Child provides a comprehensive statement of children’s rights in, to and through education and places an obligation on states to ensure that the provisions of the CRC are known to adults and children alike. The Committee on the Rights of the Child monitors the provision of child rights education in its signatory states and has urged states to ensure that education is provided in a rights-respecting environment. Whole school approaches to the implementation of the UNCRC have been developed and implemented in many UN countries. However, there has been little comparative research on this topic. The study will investigate a number of different approaches to the integration of child rights based education, reflecting on their underlying rationale and approaches to implementation as well as the extent to which they reflect the spirit and principles of the UNCRC. The research should incorporate an analysis of the ways in which children and human rights are conceptualised in different cultural contexts.

You are asked to submit a 2000 word research proposal in respect of this research objective, identifying the international models to be researched giving reasons for these choices. The research will draw on the body of theoretical, doctrinal and empirical literature on children’s rights in schools, with a focus on international best practice in child rights education as well as previous studies in various international contexts on the implementation of whole school approaches to child rights.

Proposals must provide evidence of academic reading within the research field including a paragraph on any ethical issues that are likely to arise in the course of the research. All applicants must contact the relevant named project director prior to submitting their application and proposal.
