On September 20 – October 10, 2012 Dialogue International Association organized a series of master classes for more than 250 teachers of North Caucasus schools to introduce a new publication for headmasters entitled 35 Classes by Teacher-Headmaster  (see http://www.dialogia.net/publications.html) with support from the Open Society Education Support Program and local Ministries of Education in the North Caucasian Federal District. The book contains 35 lesson plans for the class hours where headmasters are free to set the curriculum based on students’ needs. The lessons in the book provide ideas about Critical Thinking and other interactive methods that teachers can use during free class hours and beyond to support better student engagement, interest, and learning.

The project to develop this book began in April 2011 based on demand from teachers of North Caucasus republics. It was approved by Stavropol State University Scientific Council, and published in July 2012. It corresponds to the requirements to the class hours specified in the Russian Ministry of Education regulations and in the Russian Federation’s Second Generation Education Standards that came into the force in June 2012. The participant teachers and experts evaluated the Manual as a very useful and timely book and the Institutes of In-Service Teacher Training have expressed their willingness to include the Manual materials into their program for regular trainings for the teachers of the region.

The lesson plans have step-by-step instructions on how to conduct each lesson which allows both teachers with and without experience in interactive methodology implement the lessons. The lessons also take into consideration the multicultural and multi-confessional distinctiveness of the region, as well as local teachers’ often limited access to trainings during the recent turbulent history of the region.
