PhD Scholarship Competition, Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies

The Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies at Aberystwyth University is pleased to offer a full PhD scholarship to an outstanding applicant whose doctoral research topic complements our department’s research strengths in theatre, performance, film, television or media studies.

The successful candidate will receive a grant for up to three years which will cover their tuition fees (up to the UK/EU rate of approx. £3996) and also provide them with a maintenance allowance of approximately £13,863 per annum and access to a travel and conference fund (max. £500 per annum). The scholarship will commence from September 2014. Non-EU students are eligible to apply but will be expected to cover the difference between UK/EU tuition fees and the non-EU tuition fees rate (approx. £8,350 to £8,600).

Aesthetics, politics and social engagement in theatre; site-specific performance; contemporary British and Irish theatre; documentary and verbatim theatre; performance, film, media and television historiography and archiving; national and transnational theatre and cinema; Welsh and minority-language theatre, film, television and online media; alternative, avant-garde and experimental theatre and film; Russian cinema and theatre; landscape in film and performance; practice as research in relation to film, television, media, performance and theatre

Film, press and broadcasting censorship and regulatory policies; television drama, genres and aesthetics; media fan, reception and audience studies; documentary film and television; horror, fantasy and cult film and television; film stardom and performance; British cinema; music and sound in film; children and the media.

Eligibility:

To be eligible you must:

1. have obtained at least a second class honours in your undergraduate degree and a completed Masters degree or a Masters nearing completion

2. have achieved a 7.0 in IELTS, or equivalent (by 14th July 2014), if English is not your first language and you have not previously studied in the UK

3. be commencing your doctoral study in September 2014

Applications must include an application form, two academic references, academic transcripts, a research proposal (1000 to 1500 words), and a 500 word statement outlining why the applicant feels that the Department of Theatre, Film and Television Studies will be an appropriate and beneficial place to conduct their PhD research.
